Jon Houghton portrait workshop held

Jon Houghton led a group of 8 artists in an intermediate level portrait workshop March 16-18, with oils as the preferred media. Over the 3 days the artists practiced their lessons with 5 different models, each in the normal 3 hour sitting. Jon started the first day with a demo using a 6th model. The emphasis for the portrait lessons was on the ability to painting quickly, capturing the likeness with value masses as well as line drawings based on observation and measurements. Jon's palette, based on the teaching of Daniel Green, was reviewed. All enjoyed the workshop, and as always found it to be a grueling but rewarding experience. In the photos, Jon paints the model Brett in one, and in the second Jon talks about composition illustrating his points with thumbnail sketches done from the artists' various vantage points around the room.
